Meet Kirsten Snobeck, Assoc. AIA, LEED AP. 10 years ago we were incredibly fortunate to have her join our staff. She is our Senior Associate and has contributed to most of the projects that have come out of our office over the last decade. She was the lead designer on some of our best and most sustainable homes (including LEED Platinum and “regenerative” homes) and had a key role on both the Columbine and Whittier Elementary Schools. She served on Boulder’s Historic Landmark Board and has a passion for architectural preservation. For the last 7 years she has co-taught our signature seminar, “Understanding the Rules for Building in Boulder” to 700 local realtors, and has helped guide countless property owners and buyers through the complex Boulder process. In 2015, AIA Colorado North Chapter awarded her “Associate of the Year” and in 2016 she was named one of “Boulder Valley’s 40 Under 40”, recognizing her incredible talent and her contributions to excellent architectural design in Boulder County.

Meet the artists, learn about their creative process, and support our local arts scene by buying directly from the artist. The event is Oct. 7-8 & 14-15 from noon-6pm. and go on an art treasure hunt. You can get a preview of all the artists at the Opening Reception reception Friday, Oct. 6th – 6-8pm.

Family Learning Center Multi-Purpose Building
The Family Learning Center is one of Boulder’s most valuable and least well known non-profits. Over the last 34 year FLC has supported thousands of Boulder’s under-served children and families with essential programs like cooking classes (including vegetables grown in their garden!), community health screenings, physical fitness, arts classes, community meeting rooms and a safe after-school social space.
In the summer of 2015, we were contacted by FLC booster & Chamber of Commerce President, John Tayer. He asked us to help FLC; the Center had been working with a Denver Architect and contractor, and things hadn’t gone well. The project had collapsed and they were at risk of losing the major grants from the City of Boulder that would enable them to build a desperately needed 1500 s.f. multi-purpose Health & Wellness Education Center. Principal Scott Rodwin and Project Manager Jose Fernando Gonzalez redesigned the building from scratch to dramatically reduce the budget while simultaneously improving the view, the passive solar orientation, and the natural light into existing building. We then asked our friend Sandy Weeks, President of Blue Spruce Construction, to partner with us in offering pro bono services to get the project back on track. Other community members including FLC Board Members, CCM construction, Melton Construction and Rotary Club contributed significantly to the project. It was amazing to see how the community all pulled together to make this building a reality. We were recently honored to attend the Grand Opening of the new Center.
One of the particularly fun details of the project was the creation of FLC’s new donor wall (recognizing supporters). Typically, donor walls are created by engraving donor’s names onto bricks or plaques, but these are expensive and often uninspired. Dan Brannon in our office designed and fabricated a laser-cut “giving tree” made from plywood. The leaves represent individual donors and can continue to fill the wall for years to come. FLC still needs your help. Click here to donate. Please help this little tree to grow.

Happy New Year!
Happy New Year from all of us here at Rodwin Architecture + Skycastle Construction! It’s been a wonderful year of creating extraordinary new custom green homes, schools, and businesses. Here’s to an even brighter 2017!
Farmhouse
Our first “Regenerative” home, Farmhouse was on last year’s green home tour. It produces more energy than it consumes which means that the owners get a big check from Xcel every month (and free energy for their EV car). Farmhouse achieved a HERS negative-8 rating, Energy Star v.3.0 and a LEED Platinum Certification. It’s sunny, open, functional floorplan connects on all sides to the permaculture landscape for true indoor/outdoor living, and embodies the owners’ desire to tread lightly on the earth. Detailed wood craftsmanship throughout the home reflects the owner’s love of Mission style furniture. The home was elegantly tailored to the owners’ needs while simultaneously achieving an extraordinary level of sustainability. See it featured in Inhabitat.com
